an opinion on Musique
from the Crass Menagerie - review by Dave:
"Last I heard from THEATRE OF TRAGEDY, 'Aegis' was a brand new album and one of the first I ever reviewed for the Crass Menagerie. It was also the only goth rock album I ever liked (and still is), due to the excellent "angelic" female vocals, lush recording and simple but cleverly arranged songs. To this day 'Aegis' remains the only album in my entire collection that could be accused of having "pop sensibilities." It makes me kinda sad to report that 'Musique' is a step in the wrong direction. Like many rock bands that think they're being very original and groundbreaking, THEATRE OF TRAGEDY "experiments" with sampled drum beats and other trademarks of electronic music and it sounds just as hackneyed as any "electronic" music you'd find on MTV. They're trying to convey a message about technology, but it's so convoluted I wonder why they even bothered. Like 'Aegis' the vocals and production are great, but this time around the songs seem needlessly complex. Some bands experiment with their sound and the results are brilliant. Others do it and you wonder what the hell they were thinking. This album is proof THEATRE OF TRAGEDY should return to the formula they used on 'Aegis.'"
