a review of The Knowing
By Bart, from the Crass Menagerie #95:
"There used to be a time when all metal bands that came out of America sounded like Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation. Nowadays with bands like Dawnbringer, Sculptured, Evoken and Novembers Doom, American bands can't be as easily stereotyped. Novembers Doom does a nice job of resembling the older material of Anathema by mixing oppressive heaviness and alluring melody. There are two vocal styles, one a gruff male growl and sparingly used female singer. Neither comes across as depressed like many bands, but instead have a more urgent feel to them. The musical ability cannot be denied either with the heavy and more ethereal pieces intertwined beautifully. Although there are twelve songs on this album, they all seem to flow together very well. Novembers Doom has put out a couple solid albums previous to this one, and if you liked the previous albums, then this will satisfy you as well. I personally like the more desolate doom of Evoken or Skepticism, but I can't deny that this CD is a top-notch doom album."
