Noise is the liberation of sound from the narrow rules of conventional music, calling a project "noise" frees you up to include any kind of sound in the artwork. The "Day of Noise" event has always been about the freedom of non-commercial radio to deviate from the standardized conceptions of what the audience wants or needs. It exploits the immediacy of the radio format with live performance (which really includes live DJing), there are always actual human beings in the loop making off-the-cuff decisions about what sounds should come next. The listener has the feeling that at any moment, anything might happen, because anything can. The point is to embrace all kinds of creative sounds, not to rule out some types of music for "not being noisy enough".

3 Leafs is a music collective based largely in spontaneous composition. They have been playing around the bay area and west coast since 2005 and have 8 releases available. They have a new full length vinyl release in winter/spring 2013 and their interests include playing music and healthy snacks.
Aaron Oppenheim is an American-Canadian Canadian-American composer and improviser currently based in Oakland, CA. He recently received a Masters' Degree in Electronic Music from Mills College, where he studied with John Bischoff, Chris Brown, and Fred Frith. His recent work has focused on laptop-based improvised music and developing a performance practice for group electronic/acoustic free improvisation. His other work mostly consists of rigorously process-based electroacoustic and acoustic composition. He is a member of several bay-area improvising ensembles including Talk More and Architect/Enchantress.

Andrew Weathers is a composer & improviser based in Oakland, CA, who studied Electronic Music at Mills College. His current work is focused on fusing the American South with contemporary artistic practice. He tours often, plays in a variety of bands and runs Full Spectrum Records.
Antimatter is the sound work of Xopher Davidson - an ongoing exploration into the material of sound. Xopher builds his experiments in electronic sound from a basis in painting, photography, and film, and through an interest in electronic circuits going back to building radios and homemade circuits as a kid.
In 1992, Davidson rode the train to Oakland, California, where he founded the seminal Exhibit < > space. In this storefront location (situated adjacent to a freeway onramp), he presented an ongoing installation of signs and diagrams which his paintings had evolved into. Listening here to the rumblings of the overhead freeway, it became obvious that the issue of sound needed to be (re)addressed. He performed as a member of the SF live electronic groups Citizen Band and Circular Firing Squad, In 2001 he and Zbigniew Karkowski recorded the seminal subsonic treatise 'function generator. He collaborated and performed with Karkowski on 4 albums, and numerous shows. Over a course of the last 11 years he has built and explored the sound world of a homebrew modular synthesizer comprised of surplus laboratory equipment : various oscillators , pulse generators,filters and an 'analog computer.' He has released 4 albums as ANTIMATTER : Transfixion, Antimatter Vs. Antimatter, Our Lady of the Skies, and Reset. He is currently deep in work on the next.

Black Spirituals' performance involves the manipulation of temporal experience using a framework of dynamic relationships and a â€œMulti-Aesthetic Approach to Improvisation.â€ The title â€œBlack Spiritualsâ€ is borrowed from a found cassette documenting a lecture given by Bernice Reagon on the roots music of American Black Slaves. These stories form a sonic resonance that speaks of rich relationships to ones surroundings, memories, profound feelings, dreams, and the experiences that inspire human expression.
Black Spirituals is a collaboration between two soloists who have found a new platform for the intersection of tone-generating electronic technology and the heart-thumping technology of acoustic percussion. This duet features a new tradition in conversant, duo vernacular dynamics that sparked a revolution in our conceptions of space, stage, ritual, performance, geography, praxis, brotherhood, relationships, rockin' out, and more.

Botched Facelift is a one person noise project created by Dario from A Fashionable Disease and Chimora. Botched Facelift began sometime around early 2005 starting making noise with live synths, glitched circuits, stomp boxes, concrete sounds, experiments with live resonance, and instruments such as sitar and saxophone.
Brian B. James is a local DIY noise artist who has releases under Soundpress Records
among others. KZSU DJ Brick describes the sound on the Bubble-wrap Covered Record as "akin to taking shots on vicodin, with the result of your ears ringing really hard, and getting blindsided by a guy you beat up earlier in the night but coudln't even recognize when he has your hands on your throat..." James is no stranger to performing on KZSU - he has taken part in 6 hour marathons hosted on long-time KZSU program Scatterbrain Radio, with his previous project Lairdander, and will be opening Day of Noise for the third consecutive year.
Clarke Robinson is an electronic musician and improviser living in the San Francisco Bay Area. A longtime fan of punk rock, avant-garde jazz, and coffee; he now also enjoys synthesizers, electroacoustic improvisation, and tea.
A crucial contributor to local outfits The Drift and Tarentel, Danny Paul Grody is a veteran of the San Francisco experimental music scene. Grody wields guitars and keyboards to create music as diverse as improvised synthesizer pieces (Moholy Nagy), noise/drone/ambient works (Tarentel), to dubby experimental rock compositions (The Drift). On recordings under his own name, Grody gently balances guitar and synthesizer, offering solitary but delicate drone. Danny Paul Grody has solo releases on Root Strata, Students of Decay, and XRA.
Dominic Cramp released his first music for public consumption in 1995 on the ambient experimental electronic label, Silent Records, as Arthur Dent. Many years and monikers later, he is still releasing music. Mostly mining an experimental and electronic vein of organic debris, collected from an ever expanding library of field recordings and captured sound; Cramp's solo projects include Borful Tang, Lord Tang and Qulfus. He plays in the organ/drums/electronics duo, Tiberius, and the electro-acoustic collective, Vulcanus 68 while touring internationally and recording with Carla Bozuluchâ€™s Evangelista. He is also active mixing, mastering and contributing to numerous other projects in the San Francisco Bay Area where he is based.
Paul Skomsvold's Former Selves project never fails to deliver on those moments of deep reflection and emotional response, but this release in particular has even more weight and personal narrative buried between the cracks. Each track is an exercise in uplifting ambience blended with hopeless feelings and somber moments alone in one's head. Gorgeous, textured synth lines wrapped up in thoughtful and staggeringly profound moments that never exist as long as you want. Real catharsis achieved through building up and letting go
Headboggle Since 2006, Derek Gedalecia's synth and keyboard project has been operating out of San Francisco. Always expect modular synth sounds, field recordings, and aural surprises.
Twelve-year old Henry Plotnick is making music under the spell of Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Using only a Yamaha keyboard, Line 6 looping pedal, and a little amp, Henry improvises his own eclectic minimalist compositions â€“ from Keith Jarrett-style jazz to more modern electronic beats and soundscapes. He recently released an album on Holy Mountain Records entitled Fields, which ended up at #59 on KZSU's Top 100 for 2013, and #4 on their Classical/Experimental chart. He has performed at local venues such as SFMOMA, Other Cinema, Oakland's First Fridays and Noe Valley Harvest Festival. Henry describes his music as â€œa delightfully bizarre electronic looping symphony for the very patient.

Li Xi Drifting at times between fuzz-drenched, oxidized, psychedelic decimation, into realms of space-aged pristine pop, Li Xi concoct a sound that is both odd, nostalgic, dreamy and kaleidoscopic in nature. In a live setting, Li Xi often utilize heavy elements of unusual psychedelic sound to combine the soft melancholic with the loud chaotic.
Hugh Behmâ€“Steinberg is the author of Shy Green Fields (No Tell Books) and The Opposite of Work (JackLeg Press). His libretto for a children's opera, The Clever Wife, debuted in Houston in January 2012. He teaches in the MFA Writing program at California College of theArts, where he edits the journal Eleven Eleven.

Since 1993, he has focused on developing his own uniquestyle of music, which is largely characterized by organic textures, arrhythmic patterns, musical imperfections and occasional elements from pop music. Historically, he has worked extensively with fx pedals, household objects, live sound collage, consumer-grade electronics, prepared instruments, real-time sampling/looping, turntablism, field recordings and cassette recorders.

Pink Gaze is a collaboration between Sharmi Basu, Tara Sreekrishnan, & Ben Tinker. Basu is pursuing her Master of the Arts in Electronic Music and Recording Media at Mills College. Sreekrishnan is a Bay Area-based pianist and organist whose interests include performance, improvisation and electronic music; she is currently pursuing her B.A. in Music Performance (Piano and Organ) at Mills College. Tinker is a multidisciplinary artist and electronic musician who has lived in San Francisco since 1996. He chooses to work primarily with analog synthesizers with which he composes electroacoustic music, and performs regularly with the improv ensemble White Pee, and his own project That Hideous Strength.

Revenant is a quartet led by guitarist and composer Karl Evangelista
and also featuring Michael Coleman, Tom Djll, and Nava Dunkelman. Evangelista is grounded in jazz, 20th century experimentalism, and popular song, exploring the place of multiculturalism and ethnic co-existence in an increasingly post-cultural, trans-idiomatic cultural space. Signal to Noise magazine hails Evangelista as "one of the most original instrumentalists and composers of his generation." Employing violin, field recordings, and electronics, subnaught has been working at the boundary of sound and music since 2008. oscillations (http://subnaught.org/oscillators.html), a set of pieces for justly-intoned oscillators, was released in December of 2013.
The Lickets are two audio-visual artists (Mitch Greer and Rachel Smith) from Berkeley, who play electroacoustic ambient music, described as a â€œtranscendental mini orchestra.â€ Recordings and performances are adventurous, unpredictable and have included different combinations of instruments, including electronics, minimoog, woodwinds, sitar, guitar, classical strings, and harmonium. Lestrygonian, KZSU DJ, says of the experimental folk duo: "Sentient beings of all ages are guaranteed to fall in love with the sunshiney, blissful waves of ethereal, hushed tones looping into what feels like infinity. Listen to this while watching the sun rise and you can probably die happy."
Negativwobblyland is a collaboration between Peter Conheim (Negativland
, The Jet Black Hair People
) and Jon Leidecker (Wobbly
), utilizing an arsenal of "Boopers". The original Booper, invented by Negativland member The Weatherman in 1975, is an analog feedback instrument created entirely from salvaged radio and amplifier parts. Now, others have been constructed based on the original design, each with its own personality. When side-chained together, they suggest a chorus of electronic voices all speaking through the same organic throat, howling and chanting in increasingly familiar ways. It's become very difficult to refer to them as instruments.
Rising from the ashes of Xi Hammer, Yorgos & The Tangents is composed of a rotating cast of current and former KZSU DJs and other lovely performers.
zBug is an industrial jazz unit based in San Francisco, CA that presents structured improvisational music sets based on the performance venue and compositional themes along with featuring prominent video artists and musical guests on selected concert engagements. They have also been associated with Wadada Leo Smith, Kidd Jordan, Eddie Gale, and Lou Reed's Metal Machine Trio.
Ze Bib! is a collaborative effort between cellist/electronic musician Shanna Sordahl and percussionist Robert Lopez. Their music grapples with the spastic intensity arising from their explorations into sound worlds developed both collectively and independently. Currently, they have been cultivating interpretations of material and psychological structures grown out of improvisations and the deconstruction of composed melodic and rhythmic material.
