December 6, 1999: St. Nicholas

November 6 is designated the feast day of St. Nicholas of Myra, the early church figure who through evolving tradition became "Santa Claus" of modern Christmas myth. The third hour of this program has a few selections from the medieval period as recently recorded by Anonymous 4, plus the 20th century cantata of Benjamin Britten which retells some of the more famous Nicholas legends.

Also, the second hour of the program contains various forms of prophecy, first the Erythraen Sibyl's hexameter set by Lassus, then acrostic forms in Latin from the Aquitanian monasteries, and finally the "Great O Antiphons" as set by Arvo Pärt.
