April 6: Passiontide, Passover

Even though their dates float in the Sun-based Gregorian calendar used by the industrialized world, the Christian week of Passiontide and the Jewish feast of Passover always come in close proximity to each other historically, as fixed in the Jewish lunar calendar. The second hour of this program features choral music for the Christian tradition, while the final hour draws on the Passover tradition, from the account drawn by Handel in the 18th century, Israel in Egypt.

The program opens with a 1968 performance by the French pianist Robert Casadesus, in commemoration of his birthday on April 7, 1899.
