Commemoration

A large portion of this program has the loose theme of commemoration, to observe the untimely passing of Diana, Princess of Wales, on 31 August 1997. As luck would have it, John Tavener's "Song for Athene" was later included in the funeral service for Princess Diana on 6 September 1997, called by its first line, Alleluia. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest, because the composer deemed it inappropriate to remember the Princess in Athene's name.

The representative work from the BBC Promenade Concerts is Arnold Schönberg's Friede auf Erden ("Peace on Earth"), from Prom 54, performed on August 28.

The concluding segment of this program commemorates the US Labor Day holiday by spotlighting several different forms of work.
