May 8: War and Victory, Love and Marriage

This May 8 marks the 50th anniversary of V-E Day, when the European campaign of World War II was declared a success. One musical look at war includes The Spitfire, film music to promote the famous fighter plane. Shostokovich's 3rd string quartet is widely considered an early post-ware musical reaction. Finally, Háry János was a mythical warrior in an earlier Europe.

To commemorate the upcoming wedding of two friends, the bulk of this program includes music that carries mainly themes of love, including several settings of texts from the Song of Songs.

Themes of the month:
Clocks, bells or mechanical contraptions: The Spitfire.
National songs: God Save the Queen.
