On this day in the year 1957, Strom Thurmond filibustered the United States Senate for over 24 hours to block a civil rights bill. On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. answered with his "I have a dream" speech. In remembrance of this, this stanza of "Precious Lord, take my hand" speaks:

Precious Lord, take my hand
bring thy child home at last,
where the strife and the pain all are past.
I have dreamed a great dream
that love shall rule our land
