In honour of the British Queen Mother's 100th birthday, music commissioned for her 90th birthday is included, The Thistle and the Rose.

The BBC Proms series representative piece this week is from Prom 32, J. S. Bach's Violin concerto in A minor, BWV 1041. This piece also serves as the Bach 250th anniversary selection for this week.

In tribute to Sir Alec Guiness, (April 2, 1914 to August 5, 2000), "Colonel Bogey" march, the theme used by The Bridge on the River Kwai closes this program.
