Mixed Up Class Playlist, June 7, 1999

On this day in the year 1654, King Louis XIV, the "Sun King" assumed the throne of France at the age of 11. Thus, a portion of the music in the second hour comes from the French Baroque period.

Also commemorated is the bicentennial of Pushkin, the "Russian Shakespeare", so we sampled music from the Glinka operetta, Ruslan and Lyudmila, based on Pushkin's story. Note that Pushkin's date of birth was May 26, 1799 in the Old Style (i.e., Julian calendar), which migrates to June 6 in the New Style (Gregorian).
