Mixed Up Class Playlist, September 28, 1998

First, a segment on angels for the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. The final movement of the Mahler 4th Symphony employs a song from the composer's earlier Des Knabenwunderhorn, "Das Himmlische Leben" (the heavenly life), sung by an appropriately angelic voice.

Next, a segment contrasting Hell with Heaven, the respective destinations of the biblical Dives (Rich Man) and Lazarus. The tune is also known as "Star of the County Down" and as a hymntune "Kingsfold".

George Gershwin's Cuban Overture commemorates the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth.

Organist Roger Sherman, who performs an all-Bach recital Stanford on this day, also produces The Organ Loft, a program based on the premise of music that might be performed or heard in various organ lofts at various times and places in the past and present. Excerpts from his program are presented here.

The program concludes with music observing the passage of seasons from summer to autumn.
