Mixed Up Class Playlist, September 8, 1997

The program begins with "An Orkney wedding, with sunrise", to mark the birthday of the Scottish-born composer, Peter Maxwell Davies.

Because of interest indicated by visits on the Mixed Up Class web pages following the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, the hymn, "I vow to thee, my country" is included in this program, as well as the portion of Gustav Holst's The Planets from which the hymn's music originates.

This week's representative work from the BBC Promenade Concerts is Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem, from Prom 72, performed on September 12. It also commemorates the life of Sir Georg Solti, who was scheduled to conduct the Proms concert, but died on September 5, less than 2 months short of his 85th birthday. Hence, the present performance is Solti's own, recorded in 1977 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Note: The Proms performance of the Requiem was conducted by Sir Colin Davis and dedicated to the memory of both Sir Georg Solti and Diana, Princess of Wales.

Finally, to commemorate the life of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who also died this past week, Nanci Griffith's song, "St. Teresa of Avila" concludes the program. Purists will note that Mother Teresa took her name from St. Teresa of Lisieux, patronness of missionaries, but I still think it's a good tune...
