Out of Season

Some of this program originates from the current season. Some of it isn't associated with the normal climatological season.

The first section starts in Antarctica, with music that Vaughan Williams composed for the film, Scott of Antarctica, noting that the seasons in the southern hemisphere are reversed from the north. Then Rautavaara's Cantus Arcticus: Concerto for Birds and Orchestra complements the reversal.

Next is a section of various botanical forms, including a set of varying "Cherry Tree" carols. This is followed with an extended section with references to roses. (In case it isn't obvious, neither cherries nor roses are normally in season during December in the north).

Finally, a bit of fun with John Rutter's Christmas tale, Brother Heinrich's Christmas, which is very loosely connected to a vision of the medieval mystic, Heinrich Suso, who described dancing with angels to a carol with the words, "In dulci jublio".
