The Dollar Bin Album Week Special
Monday December 11th, 2000; 9 AM to Noon

For KZSU'S album week™ I picked the four albums that I enjoyed from the year 2000.

Snowboy and the Latin Section Play Afro-Cuban Jazz

This is some blazing Afro-Cuban jazz from English DJ and conguero Snowboy. The songs are mostly up-tempo, with a lot of Acid/Soul Jazz flavor, including some killer Hammond Organ

Antibalas Afro-Beat Orchestra / Liberation Afro-Beat

Antibalas is a large Afro-Funk collective from New York consisting of former members of two Desco bands, The Daktaris and the Soul Providers. The sound of Antibalas is heavily influenced by Fela, but the members also embrace James Brown and Afro-Cuban influences

Sugarman Three / Soul Donkey

Stomping Boogaloo soul jazz. This is the second Sugarman 3 album from Desco Records. This album starts and ends with two of the coolest songs ever. The breakbeat of the title track gets things going and the album ends with So Long Donkey, a blues flavored funk ballad. The songs in the middle are good too, including covers of James Brown's Out A Sight and Lou Donaldson's Hot Dog.

Mighty Imperials featuring Joseph Henry / Thunder Chicken

Straight up funk. The Mighty Imperials are a young Meters style quartet (Hammond, Guitar, Bass, and Drums). On vocals they have Joseph Henry for the old soul sound.
