underwriting

Thank you for your interest in supporting programming on KZSU, the non-commercial radio station at Stanford University. As a non-commercial, non-profit, college station, KZSU is funded by many different sources, including Stanford alumni, students, community members and businesses. You can help support KZSU with an underwriting pledge of money or goods. As thanks, we make on-air announcements about your company and your generous donation and give you a tax-deduction.

Payment for an underwriting announcement needs to made at the outset.

WHAT YOU ARE SUPPORTING

KZSU is a free-form college station run by students and community members. Our diverse programming attracts a large audience with a potential listenership of hundreds of thousands. Our signal at 90.1 FM broadcasts from the San Jose to the San Francisco airports, east to Berkeley, Hayward and Fremont, and into parts of San Francisco on a clear day. Our signal is also re-broadcast in Marin and Monterey counties via cable. We also provide a RealAudio feed, enabling our programming to be heard worldwide via the Internet.

NOW, THE SMALL PRINT

The costs to underwrite specific news, sports, public affairs, and music programs and services may vary. Typically, businesses will first decide how much they wish to donate. Then the number of underwriting announcements will be derived from the costs of the programming they sponsor. For current underwriting rates, send us e-mail, or phone us (see Contacting us, below).

All underwriting contracts are re-evaluated on a quarterly basis: the beginning of October, January, April and July (consistent with the Stanford class schedule). Shorter-term contracts are also available.

When making an underwriting donation, please consider joining other merchants who support our Volunteer Reward Program. Under this program KZSU volunteers are rewarded with gift certificates or other merchandise to thank them for their resilient attitude, demonstrated commitment and noticed quality of work.

AN EXAMPLE UNDERWRITING ANNOUNCEMENT

In an underwriting announcement, we can include the business name, the service it provides, its location, phone number, and hours of operation. We cannot include an "incentive to buy", which means no superlatives or adjectives. Much information can still be conveyed to our listeners, as demonstrated by an actual underwriting announcement:

We'd like to thank The Sundance Channel for its support of KZSU programming. The Sundance Channel is a new, 24-hour, commercial-free cable TV channel that features independent films including American and foreign features, documentaries, shorts, animation and experimental cinema. The Sundance Channel is now available from Cable Co-Op on channel 61 in Atherton, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Palo Alto. Cable Co-Op's phone number is (650) 856-8181. The Sundance Channel is affiliated with the Sundance Film Festival and airs many films that have premiered at that annual festival, held in Park City, Utah. Thanks again to The Sundance Film Channel for supporting the programs on KZSU, Stanford.

Please provide a description of your business, hours of operations, email address, World Wide Web address, address and phone number. Consult a current program schedule and specify your preferences for airtime. Some hours may already be underwritten, so all hours will be confirmed before final scheduling.

AND THERE'S MORE...

Another way to reach your people is through our quarterly program guide. This magazine-type publication is produced by KZSU staff and primarily features the new schedule which changes every three months. It's full of record reviews, articles, DJ profiles, and more. With 3,000 copies made and distributed at Stanford and in record stores, cafés, restaurants, book stores and local music concerts, it is a great place for you or your business to advertise.

(Yes, that's advertising, not underwriting. Note that the WWW editions of our guide do not include advertising because our server resides on a noncommercial portion of the Internet).

Ad rates for the program guide are a bargain compared to other print media and our guide allows you to use both of KZSU's message mediums to your advantage. For current rates, contact us as listed below.
