My favorite Geri Allen recording. She wrote all of the compositions. The music and style is original. It has a sort of surreal feel. The mixture of acoustic piano and synthesizer works well, I've missed it in her future recordings.

Ivo Perelman tenor saxophone, Flora Purim vocals, Geri Allen piano, Fred Hopkins bass, Andrew Cyrille drums, Mino Cinelu percussion, Elson Nascimento bass drum

1 Slave of Jo 2 Nesta Rua 3 The Carnation and the Rose

Total time 58:40. Recorded live at the Knitting Factory on October 16, 1990. Three traditional Brazilian folk songs arranged and adapted by Ivo. Ivo is full of energy. All of the musicians play really hard. Geri, as she does with so many musicians, complements his style. Fred Hopkins does an excellent bass solo on #3. The video includes background shots of the musicians perparing for the performance. I picked up the video at Tower Records. Write to Ivo Perelman at 163 Third Avenue #274, NY, NY 10003. Write to Video Artists International at P.O. Box 153, Ansonia Station, NY, NY 10023

My second favorite Geri Allen recording. She penned all but two compositions. The music has a post-bop bent and the tunes are adventurous especially the "Feed the Fire" trio. "And They Partied" jams with two basses, two drums! "Bed-Sty jams too.

1995 Reggie Workman "Cerebral Caverns" Postcards 1010

Reggie Workman b, Geri Allen p (2,5,7,8), Al Foster d (3,5,), Gerry Hemingway d (1,2,4,6,7), Julian Priester tb (3,4,5), Sam Rivers ts/ss/fl (1,3-5,7), Elizabeth Panzer harp (1,5,6,8), Tapan Modak tablas (1,4,5)

This is extraordinary music by outstanding musicians. As always Reggie Workman provides the basis for free improvisation. All of the musicians are leaders but here they blend into one cohesive unit. The ensemble is enhanced with beautiful harp and tablas highlights. Instrumentation is different on each tune so you get many wonderful feelings throughout.

1995 Courtney Pine "Modern Day Jazz Stories" Verve/Antilles 314 529 028-2

Courtney Pine soprano/tenor saxophones/flute, Geri Allen acoustic piano/Hammond B3 organ, Charnette Moffett double bass, Ronnie Burrage drums/percussion, DJ Pogo turntables

1 Prelude - The Water of Life 2 The 37th Chamber 3 Don't 'Xplain 4 Dah Blessing 5 In the Garden of Eden (Thinking Inside of You) 6 Creation Stepper 7 Absolution 8 Each One (Must) Teach One 9 The Unknown Warrior (Song for My Forefathers) 10 I've Know Rivers 11 Outro - Guiding Light/Total time 59:09

I'm partial to Courtney's acoustic quartet here, so I've skipped over the "smooth-jazz" compositions (1, 2, 3, 8) which I can't really stomach. The other recordings are excellent. I'll start with Dah Blessing (#4). His tenor is strong as ever. He's working with two of my favorite rhythm providers of Charnett Moffett on bass and Geri Allen on piano. They are also part of Ornette Coleman's section for his acoustic quartet. #6 sounds like Pharoah Sanders "Out of this World" and has a classic Coltrane quartet sound. It's very rhythmic. #7 Has African undertones and again, reminiscent of 'trane, Courtney is on soprano sax. #8 is a mid-tempo jazz ballad. Beautiful piano playing by Allen #5 is kind of folky with Mark Whitfield on acoustic guitar.
Overall I like the recording, an excellent mixture of the real sounds of "Modern Day Jazz".

1996 Kansas City: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Verve

Kevin Mahogany vocal, Olu Dara cornet, Nicholas Payton/James Zollar trumpet, Curtis Fowlkes/Clark Gayton trombone, Don Byron clarinet, Don Byron/James Carter/Jesse Davis/David "Fathead" Newman/Craig Handy/David Murray/Josua Redman saxophones, Russell Malone/Mark Whitfield guitar, Geri Allen/Cyrus Chestnut piano, Ron Carter/Tyrone Clark/Christian McBride bass, Victor Lewis drums

8 Froggy Bottom 9 Solitude 10 Pagin' the Devil 11 Lafayette 12 Solitude (Reprise)

Wonderfully executed old-time jazz by a cast of some of the greatest players living today. This is probably the last time you'll see them together. It swings. All tracks are excellent, steeped in the blues and swing which is what Kansas City was about.

1996 Rodney Whitaker "Children of the Light" Koch Jazz: KOC-CD-7829

1996 Ornette Coleman "Sound Museum Three Women" Harmolodic/Verve
1996 Ornette Coleman "Sound Museum Hidden Man" Harmolodic/Verve

Ornette Coleman sax/violin/trumpet, Geri Allen piano, Charnette Moffett bass, Denardo Coleman drums, * Lauren Kinhan and Chris Walker vocals

1 Sound Museum 2 Monsieur Allard 3 City Living 4 What Reason 5 Home Grown 6 Stopwatch 7 Don't You Know By Now 8 P.P. (Picolo Pesos) 9 Women of the Veil 10 Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow 11 Biosphere 12 European Echoes 13 Mob Job 14 Macho Woman

"Sound Museum" exists in two CD renditions of the same compositions played differently in each rendition. This concept was done to show music harmolodically. "Three Women" has one song (track 7) and thirteen instrumentals. "Hidden Man" includes an additional instrumental "What a Friend We Have in Jesus (Variation)". I really enjoyed both renditions but for some reason ""Hidden Man" touches me more. I think it is because I hear Geri's voice more. Go directly to Harmalodic for more information.

1997 General Music Project "General Music Project" Evidence ECD 22173-2

Kenny Garrett alto and soprano saxophones, Geri Allen piano, Charnett Moffett bass, Charles Moffett drums
Recorded on June 19, 1993 at Crossroad Studio, NY, NY.

1 Choo Choo Train 2 Apex 3 Sing A Song of Song 4 Happy Dream 5 Calling You 6 Tip-Toeing 7 Intro to Yellow 8 Sahara's Short Story 9 Sunbeam 10 Cathedral

Here you have four wonderful musicians. Two out of Detroit, Geri and Kenny. Their kindred spirits go way back. They both went to the famous Cass Technical High School. Kenny played on one of Geri's best bop dates, "The Nurturer." Mr. Marcus Belgrave nurtured them both. He's an unsung hero in Detroit, somewhat like Horace Tapscott and Billy Higgins out of L. A and I'm sure countless others across America. These guys play vital roles in African American community as mentors sacrificing fame and fortune. The Moffett/Allen connection can be found with both Moffetts. Charles played with her on Frank Lowe's adventurous star recording "Decision in Paradise." Charnett recorded with Geri on Ornette's "Sound Museum," Ornette's first in 30 years to include a piano player. Charles was Ornette's original drummer.

When I first heard this CD, I was ready to dismiss it as your typical formula jazz, you know, play the head, then some solos and wrap it up. But with repeated listening, you can really feel the passion emanating from the musicians. The music is melodic; the playing superb. Some tunes make you want to dance, like Charnett's "Choo Choo Train," and Charles "Sunbeam." "Choo Choo Train" is a grooving modern day jazz story; Geri and Kenny pull excellent solos. "Sunbeam" is more dark, reminiscent of Ornette's 60s' days, bought into the 90s. Geri sprinkles and rolls her erotic notes throughout and she does a deep, personal exchange with Kenny. Other songs are slow and quiet like Charnett's mesmerizing, Coltrane inspired "Happy Dream," and Bob Telson's "Calling You" from the movie "Bagdad Café." You can hear lazy grooves on Geri's "Intro to Yellow" allegro, Garrett's beautiful, haunting exchange with Geri and Charnett on "Sahara's Short Story" and Charnett's "Cathedral." There are bop originals, Mulgrew Miller's "Apex," and Garrett's danceable "Tip-Toeing" and "Sing A Song Of Song".

1997 Geri Allen "Eyes... In The Back Of Your Head" Blue Note 7243 8 38297 2 9

Geri Allen piano/synthesizer, Ornette Coleman alto saxophone (3,10), Wallace Roney trumpet (4,6,8,9), Cyro Baptista percussion (1,4,5,6)

Geri Allen's first release as a leader in five years. This date is reminissent of her earlier "Twylight" recording. She presents music in solo, duo, and trio format. The music is spacious, it embraces all aspects of her creativity from soft delicacy to hard driving rhythms.

  1. Mother Wit - (03:05) upbeat piano/percussion duo
  2. New Eyes Opening - (05:37) quiet solo piano dedication to her new born child
  3. Vertical Flowing (05:27) - Ornette's dark, raw, angular alto surrounded by Geri's clusters and cascades of sound
  4. M.O.P.E. (06:11) - Originally recorded on her 1985 release "Home Grown", this features Wallace Roney's rolling trumpet lines and Baptisa on tabla, and shakers
  5. FMFMF (05:34) - A continuation of her early "When Kabuya Dances" (Printmakers 1984,Twylight 1989) with lots of percussion in the background
  6. Dark Eyes (04:20)
  7. Little Waltz (06:11) Spiritual rendition with Geri on piano and synthesizer with bits of percussion throughout
  8. In The Back Of Your Head (5:52) Spacious, introspective duo with Geri playing a lot in the lower register. Wonderful playing by both and good exchange of ideas
  9. Windows To The Soul (5:11) Most abstract with Geri playing piano strings and other parts of the piano. Trumpet is almost non-existant
  10. The Eyes Have It (7:23) - Spiritual duo performance, rhythmic, sometimes abstract, sometimes melodic, sometimes playing alone, sometime together.

The Gathering was taken directly from the Dobbin's family reunion held in Detroit in 1994. As with her last project, she has put together an ensemble of stellar musicians. The majority of the compositions are modal and the entire CD flows from one mood to another. Geri is perfecting her sound as a composer and seems to be leaning towards reaching a larger, more accepting audience.

  1. The Gathering
  2. Dark Prince - Upbeat bop. Rock influences from Vernon Reid's guitar *
  3. Sleepin' Pretty - slow, modal and deep with bass & bass clarinet
  4. Light Matter - Trio with Buster and Lenny. Another modal groove, with hip bass beat. Moves into a bop mode, where they take off. *
  5. Baby's Breath - twinkly
  6. Ray - twinkly, new age-ish, pretty. Folk influences from Vernon
  7. Soul Heir * - Modern jazz. Great playing from Geri! Lenny wails away on the drums8. Joy And Wonder 9. Gabriel's Royal Blue Reals
  8. Daybreak And Dreams
  9. Angels ** - Angelic ensemble with beautiful harmonies.
